Microsoft Acquires Miburo to Enhance Cybersecurity Threat Intelligence

CEO Times Contributor

Microsoft has announced the acquisition of Miburo, a cybersecurity firm renowned for its expertise in tracking foreign information operations and analyzing emerging digital threats. The acquisition, disclosed on April 5, 2025, represents a strategic move by Microsoft to reinforce its threat intelligence capabilities amid rising global concerns over cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns.

Miburo, founded by former FBI agent Clint Watts, has built a reputation for uncovering and analyzing malign influence operations originating from state-sponsored actors. The company specializes in research across 16 languages and provides detailed insights into disinformation tactics employed across digital platforms. Its deep understanding of foreign cyber operations positions Microsoft to better anticipate and respond to complex digital threats.

As part of the integration, Miburo will join Microsoft’s Customer Security and Trust organization. The collaboration will see Miburo’s analysts working alongside Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Center and Threat Context Analysis team to deliver enhanced protection and situational awareness for both private and public sector clients.

Tom Burt, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Customer Security and Trust, emphasized the importance of the acquisition in a company blog post: “With the acquisition of Miburo, we will continue our mission to take action and to partner with others in the public and private sectors to find long-term solutions that will stop foreign adversaries from threatening public and private sector customers and, in fact, the very foundations of our democracy.”

The acquisition comes at a time when geopolitical instability has led to a surge in state-sponsored cyber activity. Governments and corporations worldwide have increasingly turned to advanced cybersecurity solutions to defend against the growing sophistication of cyber and information warfare tactics. Miburo’s tools and methodologies are expected to enhance Microsoft’s ability to detect, attribute, and mitigate these threats in real time.

Microsoft has made significant investments in recent years to strengthen its cybersecurity infrastructure. The company’s Azure cloud platform, Office 365 suite, and enterprise security offerings all stand to benefit from the real-time intelligence Miburo provides. This move also aligns with Microsoft’s broader security strategy, which focuses on proactive defense, transparency, and collaboration with international stakeholders to combat global cybercrime.

While financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, the addition of Miburo reflects Microsoft’s commitment to expanding its security footprint and delivering best-in-class threat intelligence services to its global user base.
