Youth Orators Academy: Empowering the Next Generation of Thought Leaders

CEO Times Contributor

Youth Orators Academy nurtures young communicators, developing public speaking and leadership skills that transform students into confident leaders.

When you think of leadership, what comes to mind? Is it someone speaking in front of a crowd, rallying support with a powerful speech? Or is it someone quietly leading by example, guiding others through action? At Youth Orators Academy (YOA), the belief is simple: leadership starts with the ability to communicate effectively,  and every child has the potential to become a powerful speaker and leader in their own right.

Indu Kannaiyan, the founder of Youth Orators Academy, knows this better than anyone. As a passionate speaker and mentor, Indu has seen firsthand the transformation that comes from nurturing young minds with the skills of public speaking, emotional intelligence, and leadership. Since founding YOA, her mission has been clear: to help children discover the power of their voice, develop self-confidence, and step into their roles as leaders,  not only in the classroom but also in life.

The Journey of Youth Orators Academy:

The story of Youth Orators Academy begins with a simple yet profound observation: many children struggle to find their voice in a world where speaking up can be intimidating. From the shyest students to those who may already be outspoken, every child faces their own challenges when it comes to communication and leadership. Indu Kannaiyan recognized the importance of giving young people a safe space to grow and express themselves freely, which led her to create YOA in 2018.

What started as a desire to help children overcome self-doubt quickly evolved into a holistic approach to leadership and communication. Indu combined her own experience as a Toastmasters International leader and her deep passion for emotional well-being to develop a comprehensive program designed to build emotional intelligence alongside public speaking skills.

The Five-Level Certification Program

At YOA, the journey to becoming a confident speaker and leader is a well-structured path, marked by five levels of growth. The academy offers a unique certification program, which combines public speaking with emotional intelligence to help students transform from confident communicators into emerging thought leaders.

  • Level 1: Budding Speaker (6 Months)
The journey begins with building foundational skills, such as overcoming stage fear, learning impromptu speaking frameworks like PREP, PPP, and STAR, and developing social confidence. Students also start journaling for emotional strength and engage in basic Zoom/public speaking setups.

  • Level 2: Confident Speaker (12 Months)
As students progress, they refine their skills through creative writing, storytelling, and preparing speeches using frameworks like 4 Mat and P.I.S.S. Students also gain an introduction to debating, memory-building activities, and daily affirmations to help shift their mindset.

  • Level 3: Budding Thought Leader (12 Months)
This level helps students cultivate leadership qualities by exploring their DISC profiles, improving listening and questioning skills, and developing a persuasive speaking style. Students are also introduced to advanced techniques like Kaizen and Fishbone thinking and are encouraged to host mini-masterclasses or deliver speeches.

  • Level 4: Thought Leader (12 Months)
At this stage, students take on leadership roles, developing their purpose and learning advanced presentation tools. They gain skills in podcasting, interviewing, and even public representation at events and expos. The culmination of this level is a place on the Wall of Fame.

  • Level 5: Mentorship & Executive Roles
The final level prepares students for mentorship roles, where they can coach junior speakers and take on executive committee responsibilities. Students also have the option to prepare for a TED Talk pathway or explore franchise and coaching options for future leadership.

The road to building YOA hasn’t been without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles has been overcoming the misconception that public speaking and emotional intelligence are “nice-to-have” skills, rather than essential tools for future leaders. In a traditional educational system, these skills are often underemphasized, yet they are critical for success in the real world.

Through her work at Toastmasters International, where Indu served as the President and Area Director, she saw the impact that mentorship and public speaking had on both young and adult learners. Her commitment to empowering young minds grew stronger, and in 2021, she was awarded Toastmaster of the Year for her leadership contributions. This recognition fueled her drive to create YOA, where these life-changing skills would be available to children at an earlier age.

What Makes Youth Orators Academy Different

While there are many programs that focus on public speaking, YOA sets itself apart by seamlessly integrating emotional intelligence into its curriculum. YOA understands that effective communication isn’t just about delivering a speech; it’s about connecting with others emotionally, listening deeply, and expressing ideas with clarity and purpose.

What makes the academy unique is its hands-on approach and the wealth of opportunities students have to apply what they’ve learned. With inspiring masterclasses, workshops on time management and leadership, and opportunities to compete in speaking challenges, students are constantly growing and learning in a dynamic environment.

Additionally, YOA’s commitment to fostering emotional growth through journaling, goal setting, and mindset shifts gives students the tools they need to build resilience and self-awareness,  qualities that go beyond public speaking and will serve them in all areas of life.

The YOA Experience: A Supportive Environment for Growth

At Youth Orators Academy, students experience more than just lessons in public speaking. They are immersed in a vibrant, supportive community that nurtures their potential. Students have access to exclusive masterclasses on memory building, time management, leadership skills, and the power of humor in speeches. They engage in hands-on workshops that cover everything from goal setting to creative writing for speakers and interview skills.

Moreover, students can participate in in-house speaking competitions, debates, and storytelling challenges, pushing themselves to grow and refine their skills. For those eager to go beyond the classroom, open speaking opportunities in local competitions, YouTube contests, and podcasts allow them to showcase their talents to a broader audience.

If you want your child to develop confidence, leadership skills, and the ability to express themselves with clarity and impact, Youth Orators Academy is the place to start. The academy’s unique curriculum empowers students to grow into effective communicators, leaders, and thinkers, setting them on the path to becoming changemakers in the world.
