Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal Restructures Leadership Amid Elon Musk Acquisition Talks

CEO Times Contributor

In June 2022, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal initiated significant leadership changes, including the departures of consumer product leader Kayvon Beykpour and head of revenue product Bruce Falck. These moves occurred during a period of uncertainty as Twitter was in the process of being acquired by Elon Musk. Agrawal also announced a hiring freeze and cost-cutting measures to ensure operational efficiency and resilience. He emphasized the importance of having the right leaders in place to navigate the company’s future, regardless of the acquisition outcome.

Beykpour, who joined Twitter in 2015 following the company’s acquisition of Periscope, led the development of several key features, including Communities, Topics, and Creator Tools. Falck, who oversaw revenue products, also confirmed his departure. Both executives stated that the decision to leave was not theirs, indicating that Agrawal had asked them to step down. Jay Sullivan was appointed as the new general manager of Bluebird and interim general manager of Goldbird, overseeing consumer and revenue products.

Agrawal explained that these changes were necessary to build a stronger Twitter and manage costs effectively. He acknowledged the possibility that Musk’s deal to purchase the company could fall through and stated that the company needed to be prepared for all scenarios. In a memo to employees, Agrawal noted that Twitter had not met certain growth milestones and needed to reassess its operations.

The leadership restructuring and cost-cutting measures were part of Agrawal’s efforts to stabilize the company during the acquisition process. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the deal, Agrawal remained focused on improving Twitter’s operations and ensuring the company was well-positioned for the future.

In October 2022, Elon Musk completed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter. One of his first actions as the new owner was to fire Agrawal, along with other top executives, including CFO Ned Segal and policy chief Vijaya Gadde. These moves marked a significant shift in Twitter’s leadership and set the stage for Musk’s vision for the platform.
