On May 27, 2025, a transformative new program was launched in central Michigan to support rural entrepreneurs and small business development. The Middle Michigan Development Corporation (MMDC) has introduced the Middle Michigan Place-Based Business Initiative, a comprehensive plan backed by $310,848 in grant funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Trusted Connector Grant Program.
This initiative is designed to uplift rural and underserved communities across central Michigan by offering targeted resources such as financial assistance, mentorship opportunities, infrastructure grants, and community-building events. Through this initiative, MMDC aims to stimulate grassroots economic growth, foster innovation, and build a resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Driving Rural Economic Growth
The core mission of the Middle Michigan Place-Based Business Initiative is to break down the traditional barriers that prevent entrepreneurs in rural areas from succeeding. The program is tailored to meet the specific needs of these communities, including limited access to capital, fewer networking opportunities, and a lack of specialized technical assistance.
Key components of the initiative include:
-
Monthly Business Mixers: Informal, recurring events designed to help local business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, and investors connect, exchange ideas, and collaborate on projects.
-
Annual Business and Startup Summit: A high-profile gathering scheduled to take place in Mount Pleasant. This flagship event will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and a business showcase, providing valuable exposure and education for new and existing entrepreneurs.
-
Film Readiness Initiative: This innovative component prepares the region to host film production activities, promoting local economic stimulation through tourism, temporary employment, and service utilization.
-
Matching Grant Program: A total of $120,000 has been allocated through this program. Of that, $40,000 will be used for façade improvements to revitalize the appearance of storefronts and main streets, while $80,000 will go toward technological upgrades critical to improving operational efficiency for small businesses.
Supporting Local Innovation
One of the most anticipated events under the initiative is the 2025 Downtown Pitch Event in Reed City, where entrepreneurs will present their business ideas to a panel of judges. The winner will receive a $10,000 grant to help bring their business vision to life. This competition is not only a way to reward creativity and hard work but also serves to highlight the diverse entrepreneurial talent across the region.
In addition to financial resources, the initiative provides technical and logistical support to help startups navigate the early stages of business development. Entrepreneurs will have access to MMDC business advisors, legal and financial consultants, and digital marketing professionals.
Fostering Strategic Partnerships
To enhance the initiative’s effectiveness and scalability, MMDC is forming alliances with several key regional institutions:
Local Chambers of Commerce
By working alongside chambers of commerce, MMDC can efficiently reach out to potential entrepreneurs, disseminate information about available resources, and build trust within the business community.
Educational Institutions
Colleges and universities will contribute academic research, workforce training, and student talent. This collaboration is expected to produce a stronger pipeline of educated, business-savvy professionals entering the local economy.
Development Agencies
Other regional development organizations will align their missions with MMDC to ensure cohesive strategies and shared success metrics. This alignment allows for better coordination and resource sharing across different sectors.
A Long-Term Vision for Community Growth
The Place-Based Business Initiative is part of MMDC’s broader vision to revitalize central Michigan’s economy through inclusive, community-led development. By targeting small towns and underserved populations, the program acknowledges the vital role that rural entrepreneurs play in shaping the state’s future.
In the coming months, MMDC will also hire additional downtown business liaisons, professionals who will serve as connectors between local governments, business owners, and support networks. These liaisons will be instrumental in helping businesses navigate challenges such as permitting, zoning, and expansion planning.
