Ricko Dupri Sample, an emerging figure in the fields of literature, music, and film, has firmly established himself as a multifaceted artist whose journey reflects both creative reinvention and a deep commitment to advocacy for independent creators. Known for his works across various mediums—books, instrumental music, and film—he has used his platform to explore the intersections of creativity, legal rights, and social impact.
From an early age, Ricko was determined to chart an unconventional path. Initially drawn to a wide range of professions such as an astronaut, scientist, doctor, and actor, Ricko never anticipated becoming an author and screenwriter. While books were never his first love, a pivotal moment came in 2018 when he discovered the Bigfoot Script Challenge. This screenwriting competition sparked a shift in his creative direction, and he soon found himself captivated by the art of storytelling. He crafted his first TV pilot script, which eventually served as the inspiration for his debut book, Bigfoot Untold.
Released in December 2018, Bigfoot Untold blends folklore, adventure, and suspense to immerse readers in a mysterious, coming-of-age tale. The book’s success motivated Ricko to push further into writing. His second book, The Three Mysterious Tales, was an adaptation of Indonesian folklore and real-life events that he wrote as a 14-year-old while pursuing his undergraduate studies. This literary work weaves together ancient legends with historical mysteries, offering readers a glimpse into Indonesian culture and history.
Ricko’s third book, Refuse to Lose, took a more personal direction, chronicling his father’s battle with stage-4 bladder cancer, COPD, and a traumatic car accident that nearly devastated his family. The book also sheds light on the wrongful eviction that significantly impacted his life, a subject that further heightened Ricko’s interest in legal advocacy.
Through these literary works, Ricko’s creative prowess shines, but it is his commitment to advocacy and justice that distinguishes him from others in his field. Beyond his creative endeavors, Ricko has become an outspoken advocate for independent creators’ legal rights. As an artist navigating the complex world of music production, screenwriting, and publishing, Ricko’s firsthand experiences with the challenges of creative industries have led him to pursue legal studies to better understand and combat these challenges.
Ricko’s journey into the world of music production was also born out of his adaptability. During the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, he transitioned from acting and screenwriting to producing instrumental music, releasing four albums: First, Summer, Enjoy, and Sunset. His musical works, each with a distinct artistic vision, marked another chapter in Ricko’s ongoing exploration of the creative process. However, this new venture also revealed the legal obstacles faced by independent artists in the music industry, prompting Ricko to pursue a degree in legal studies at the American Public University System (APUS).
Ricko’s academic achievements are a testament to his drive and intellectual curiosity. After graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Visual & Performing Arts from Green River College—earned concurrently with his high school diploma—he pursued further studies at the New York Film Academy (NYFA). There, he honed his skills in screenwriting, filmmaking, and acting, earning his degree in August 2024 with Summa Cum Laude honors. With this academic foundation and his hands-on experience in multiple artistic fields, Ricko has positioned himself as a unique advocate for the rights of creators in various industries.
Beyond his creative output, Ricko has remained dedicated to community service. He volunteered at a food bank in Auburn, Washington, reinforcing his commitment to social impact and helping others in need. His diverse experiences continue to shape his approach to both art and advocacy, ensuring that his work transcends personal achievement and contributes to the greater good of society.
Ricko Records, his personal label, serves as the platform for his creative output and the intersection of his varied talents. Whether through books, films, music, or legal advocacy, Ricko remains focused on ensuring that independent creators are empowered and protected in their artistic pursuits. He hopes to bridge the gap between art and law, using his expertise to help fellow creators safeguard their work and navigate the complexities of the creative industries.
His journey stands as a powerful example of how challenges can lead to innovative solutions. Ricko’s commitment to both his artistic passions and his legal studies sets him apart from others in his field, and his work continues to inspire those who seek to navigate the complicated, ever-evolving landscape of the creative industries. He strives to uplift others by ensuring that artists, writers, and filmmakers have the resources and protections they deserve to thrive in their craft.
