Rebuilding Girls’ Futures: How Faith and Self-Worth Are Transforming Youth Mental Health

CEO Times Contributor

Faith Enlightens Self-Love Academy helps adolescent girls build self-worth and resilience through youth care programs.

In a small, overcrowded behavioral health unit, Faith Beasley found herself sitting across from a teen who was struggling with emotional dysregulation. With a history of trauma and self-harm, the girl’s eyes told a story of deep internal struggle, shaped by years of neglect and instability, and a belief that she wasn’t enough. Faith had encountered similar situations many times before, but this time, something clicked.

The real issue wasn’t just the girl’s behaviors or outbursts, it was her belief about herself. “I’m broken,” she’d say. “I’ll never be enough.” Faith recognized that this was a recurring theme among the girls she worked with. Their struggles were often rooted in feelings of unworthiness and a lack of self-belief.

This moment was pivotal for Faith, leading her to leave her job in adolescent mental health and dedicate herself to creating something different: Faith Enlightens Self-Love Academy (FESLA). FESLA is a program designed to address the root cause of many young girls’ struggles, self-worth.

A Mission Rooted in Real-World Experience

FESLA is built on Faith’s firsthand experience working with adolescent girls in behavioral health units, group homes, and juvenile justice programs. After years of seeing how girls were treated for their behaviors but rarely their deeply ingrained beliefs about themselves, Faith realized that addressing self-worth was essential for meaningful transformation.

FESLA’s mission is to teach self-worth as an essential life skill. Many girls in the programs FESLA serves have never been shown how to understand or regulate their emotions. Instead, they often enter these environments feeling invisible, unlovable, or trapped in cycles of harm. FESLA works to change these beliefs.

“At the core of FESLA’s work is the belief that self-worth is something that can be learned,” Faith explains. “Self-worth isn’t just a feeling. It’s a system that can be taught in a structured, emotionally safe way, and when girls learn it, it can significantly impact their lives.”

Introducing Self-Worth Systems

FESLA stands out because of its innovative framework, known as Self-Worth Systems. This approach integrates mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, trauma-informed practices, identity development, and social-emotional learning into a comprehensive model that can be implemented in youth facilities and schools.

Each of FESLA’s curriculum packages includes video-based lessons, psychoeducational group scripts, interactive activities, worksheets, assessments, and facilitator guides, designed for easy implementation. No advanced clinical training is required, so staff can effectively teach self-worth principles, even with limited preparation.

The result? A more structured environment that benefits both staff and the youth they serve. “Staff often feel overwhelmed, and the girls are in need of care,” says Faith. “FESLA was created to address both of these needs by offering a practical tool for building self-worth.”

The Power of Transformational Curriculum

Unlike many traditional social-emotional learning (SEL) programs, FESLA’s curriculum is designed specifically for girls aged 12 to 18 who have experienced trauma, emotional dysregulation, or involvement with juvenile justice. These girls often feel unseen or unheard, with little understanding of their identity or potential.

“The reality is, many of these girls are struggling to understand themselves,” says Faith. “Our curriculum is not just about managing behavior; it’s about helping them rewrite the internal narratives that keep them stuck. We focus on identity, values, emotional regulation, and decision-making in a way that resonates with their unique experiences.”

The curriculum includes engaging doodle-style visuals to simplify complex psychological concepts and make learning more accessible, especially for girls who may feel overwhelmed by traditional education methods.

Measuring Real-World Impact

FESLA has developed tools to assess the effectiveness of its curriculum. The program provides facilities with clear tracking systems to measure improvements in areas such as self-esteem, emotional regulation, resilience, and self-awareness. These assessments help staff monitor progress and ensure that the program is having a positive impact.

The curriculum is also adaptable for various settings, including behavioral health units, juvenile detention centers, schools, and group homes. FESLA’s model is now being adopted by institutions across the country to improve outcomes for teen girls.

Faith’s Vision for the Future

Faith’s commitment to creating FESLA was born from both her professional and personal experiences. After working with numerous girls in crisis, she noticed a critical gap in care: while many programs focused on behavior, few addressed the emotional beliefs that shaped those behaviors.

“I created this program because I saw too many girls treated for their behaviors, but never for their beliefs,” Faith reflects. “I built FESLA for the girls I used to sit with on the unit, girls who didn’t need more control, they needed more understanding.”

Today, FESLA is expanding its reach through partnerships with behavioral health networks and juvenile justice programs, aiming to implement Self-Worth Systems nationwide and transform the way youth mental health is approached.

Why FESLA Matters

The importance of FESLA cannot be overstated. In a world where adolescent girls often face systemic challenges, emotional struggles, and a lack of self-belief, FESLA is offering them a lifeline. When these girls learn to see their worth, they are empowered to make better decisions, build healthier relationships, and ultimately shape their futures in a positive way.

Through the transformative power of self-worth, FESLA is creating a ripple effect that will positively impact generations to come. Faith’s unwavering belief in the girls she serves is the heart of this mission, and through FESLA, she is helping them realize that they are more than enough.
