M3DS Academy: How One Entrepreneur is Shaping 3D Education

Stefan Mitrov built M3DS Academy from a small shed to a globally recognized institution, revolutionizing 3D art and game design education with mentorship-driven innovation.

Defying Expectations, Defining the Future

In the heart of Skopje, North Macedonia, a 20-year-old named Stefan Mitrov took a massive gamble on a dream that seemed impossible. With just $5,000, a few computers, and an idea, he transformed a tiny backyard shed into the birthplace of M3DS Academy, a school dedicated to shaping the future of 3D art and game design. Skeptics questioned his ambition, but Stefan’s unwavering belief in the power of mentorship and education fueled his resolve. Fast forward to today, and M3DS Academy isn’t just surviving—it’s thriving, ranked among the top 10 Game Design & Development schools globally. This is the story of how Stefan Mitrov redefined what it means to educate and inspire the next generation of 3D artists.

A Dream in a Shed: The Beginnings of M3DS Academy

In 2016, Stefan Mitrov didn’t have the luxury of a prestigious education or deep-pocketed investors. What he did have was a passion for 3D art, a wealth of self-taught knowledge, and the unwavering drive to bring world-class education to his homeland. With $5,000 in savings, Stefan opened the doors to M3DS Academy in a small shed behind his family’s house.

The first days were tough. Stefan lived on a shoestring budget, often working long hours just to keep the doors open. Despite the odds, he was determined to build something that would not only benefit him but would give the youth of North Macedonia the chance to pursue careers in 3D art and game design. “I wanted to give kids in my country the opportunity to learn 3D and animation without leaving home,” Stefan recalls. “I believed in their potential, and I believed in myself.”

For the first few years, M3DS Academy barely scraped by. Stefan worked long hours—teaching, designing curriculum, and managing the academy—all while keeping the lights on by reinvesting every dollar back into the business. Even during moments of near bankruptcy, Stefan never lost faith in his mission. “I couldn’t fail,” he says. “It was bigger than just me. It was about giving young people the chance to follow their dreams.”

Breaking Through: Industry Partnerships and Global Recognition

As M3DS Academy began to establish itself, Stefan knew that in order to truly stand out in the global education arena, he needed to align with industry leaders. That’s exactly what he did.

In 2017, at the age of 21, Stefan became the youngest Autodesk Certified Instructor in the world. This credential provided M3DS Academy with an undeniable stamp of credibility. It validated the academy’s curriculum and affirmed that it met global standards. But this was just the beginning.

Stefan quickly leveraged his connections to bring M3DS Academy into the fold of major industry players like Epic Games. The academy became an Unreal Engine Academic Partner, enabling students to learn on one of the most powerful game development platforms in the world. By becoming an Autodesk Authorized Training Center, M3DS Academy also gained access to specialized resources, including certifications that would help students land jobs at top studios worldwide.

These partnerships were pivotal in M3DS’s growth, providing students with industry-standard tools and access to certifications that would set them apart in a competitive field. Through these strategic alliances, Stefan ensured that his students weren’t just learning 3D art—they were learning how to thrive in the fast-paced, ever-evolving world of game development.

The M3DS Difference: Mentorship Over Curriculum

While many schools focus solely on delivering content, M3DS Academy places mentorship at the center of its educational model. Stefan understood early on that students don’t just need lessons—they need guidance. This is why M3DS Academy offers something that traditional institutions often don’t: personalized, one-on-one mentorship.

From day one, every student at M3DS receives direct access to industry professionals and experienced instructors, ensuring they never feel lost in a large class. Stefan and his team of instructors, many of whom are working professionals in the 3D art and game development industry, are always available to provide support and feedback. “We don’t just teach software,” says Stefan. “We mentor our students, guiding them every step of the way.”

This personalized approach has made M3DS Academy unique in the education space. Rather than forcing students to follow a rigid schedule, M3DS offers a flexible yet structured curriculum that adapts to each student’s needs. This approach allows students to progress at their own pace, all while receiving the kind of individualized attention they need to develop as both artists and professionals.

For many students, this mentorship-driven model is a game-changer. Take Simon Zafirovski, for example, who enrolled in M3DS Academy in 2019. Simon quickly stood out for his talent and work ethic, earning the opportunity to become an instructor after graduation. Today, Simon is the Head of Education and Games at M3DS, overseeing the academic direction of the academy. His story is proof that M3DS is more than just an educational institution—it’s a place where students are empowered to become leaders in their field.

The Success of M3–Con: Bridging the Local with the Global

One of Stefan’s most ambitious ideas came in 2019 when he decided to host M3–Con, a global conference on 3D art and animation in Skopje. Bringing world-renowned industry professionals to Macedonia seemed like an impossible task, but Stefan’s persistence and reputation paid off. Through his connections with Autodesk and Epic Games, he secured top-tier speakers from Pixar, DreamWorks, and Sony Pictures Imageworks to speak at the event.

M3–Con was a huge success, with attendees from across the globe flocking to Skopje for a rare opportunity to learn from industry giants. For many students, meeting their heroes and hearing firsthand from professionals at the top of their game was a life-changing experience. As Stefan puts it, “We were no longer just a local academy. We had created something that could compete on the world stage.”

M3–Con has become an annual event, and with it, M3DS Academy’s reputation continues to grow. The academy now enjoys collaborations with some of the biggest names in the 3D art and game development industry, giving students access to unparalleled opportunities.

Building a Global Community: Access to Opportunity for All

What started as a small, local academy has grown into a global hub for aspiring 3D artists. Today, M3DS Academy has students from over 100 countries, with an online program that allows anyone, anywhere, to access world-class education. This global reach is not just about attracting international students—it’s about giving everyone an equal opportunity to succeed.

Whether in Macedonia, the U.S., or India, M3DS Academy provides students with the tools they need to build successful careers in 3D art and game development. The academy’s dedication to helping students land jobs is reflected in its impressive placement rate: nearly all graduates find work in the industry, many at top studios like Ubisoft, Marvel, and HBO.

Stefan’s mission to democratize access to education is evident in the many outreach initiatives M3DS Academy has undertaken. The academy has introduced 3D design and printing workshops to local high schools across Macedonia, providing students with hands-on experience and certifications that help them stand out in the job market. These initiatives have directly impacted over 8,000 young people, many of whom have gone on to enroll at M3DS Academy or pursue careers in 3D art.
