Forbes 30 Under 30 leader Hugo Pais grows Alfabrent from fuel stations to global carbon offsetting initiatives.
In 2018, as most people were winding down for the winter holidays, Hugo Pais was contemplating a leap that would redefine his future. The former web designer, whose portfolio had graced football club promotions and online campaigns, was on the verge of walking away from a comfortable career in marketing. A fuel station in Guimarães, Portugal, had gone up for sale, and something about the prospect caught his attention. It was more than a business opportunity. It was a chance to build something tangible, enduring, and far removed from his past work in digital design. Against conventional advice, and fully aware of the financial and mental strain ahead, Hugo took the risk. It would be the beginning of Alfabrent.
From Pixels to Petrol
Hugo Pais’s professional life began in creativity. Straight out of high school, he entered the world of freelance web design, crafting visual identities and digital artwork. His love for football led him to create images for clubs’ social media channels, blending personal passion with professional skill. Over time, his interest in design diminished. Seeking new challenges, he moved into advertising and marketing for an online entertainment platform, where he honed his strategic thinking and communication skills.
The entrepreneurial pull remained constant. “I have always been willing to take risks when I believe in something,” Hugo says. “Sometimes that means stepping into a completely new sector.” The turning point came when he saw the Guimarães fuel station listing. It was not only a business investment but an entry into the energy market, a sector he believed had room for innovation.
Building Alfabrent
Purchasing the station in 2018, Hugo founded Alfabrent with the mission of delivering reliable energy solutions and expanding into multiple locations. Leaving the stability of his marketing role, he committed himself entirely to the project. The transition was demanding. Energy retail required significant investment, operational precision, and resilience in a competitive market. Hugo’s strategic approach and willingness to manage all aspects of the business, from logistics to development, became key drivers of growth.
Over the following years, Alfabrent expanded beyond its original site, acquiring additional fuel stations in both Portugal and Spain. The company also introduced fuel delivery services for businesses, addressing the demand for efficient and dependable supply.
Recognition and Risk
In 2025, Hugo’s achievements earned him a place on the Forbes Portugal “30 Under 30” list. The recognition affirmed his approach to calculated risk and growth. For Hugo, awards are milestones, not endpoints. “I am proud of what we have built, but I am always thinking about what is next,” he says.
The next phase is a pivot toward sustainability, which Hugo views as both a responsibility and an opportunity.
Innovating with Sustainability
Under the Alfabrent brand, Hugo is developing an online carbon offsetting platform for companies seeking to take measurable climate action. The platform will allow businesses to calculate their carbon footprint and offset emissions through verified environmental projects in a streamlined process.
The launch plan is ambitious. Germany is set for 2026, with other European markets to follow, and entry into the United States targeted for 2027. “Companies can easily go there and contribute to the environment,” Hugo explains. The goal is not only to provide a service but to make offsets a standard part of corporate practice.
A Different Kind of Competitor
What distinguishes Hugo from many in his field is his adaptability. While others specialize within one sector, he embraces change, applying lessons from previous industries to new ventures. “The energy market is competitive, but I am not afraid to step into something new if I believe it can have an impact,” he says.
Alfabrent’s path reflects that philosophy. From fuel stations to cross-border operations and now to sustainability-driven digital services, the company’s evolution is rooted in a willingness to explore and adapt.
The Road Ahead
With the carbon offsetting platform on track for its European debut, Hugo continues to expand Alfabrent’s fuel network. He views traditional energy and sustainable solutions as complementary. One addresses present needs, while the other prepares for future demands.
Hugo’s journey from designing sports graphics to leading multi-country energy operations demonstrates the value of calculated risk and persistence. It is the story of someone who has refused to be defined by one profession and who understands that leadership often requires reinvention.
