In a significant move to bolster its position in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, Amazon announced in September 2023 a strategic investment of up to $4 billion in Anthropic, an AI safety and research company. This partnership designates Amazon Web Services (AWS) as Anthropic’s primary cloud provider, integrating Anthropic’s advanced AI models into AWS services. The collaboration aims to accelerate the development of safer AI systems and expand AWS’s offerings in the competitive cloud market.
The investment agreement entails an initial $1.25 billion infusion, with the potential to increase Amazon’s total investment to $4 billion over time. As part of the deal, Anthropic commits to utilizing AWS as its primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, including safety research and the development of future foundation models. Anthropic will also leverage AWS’s custom-designed Trainium and Inferentia chips to build, train, and deploy its AI models.
“We have tremendous respect for Anthropic’s team and foundation models, and believe we can help improve many customer experiences, short and long-term, through our deeper collaboration,” said Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic has developed a family of large language models known as Claude. These models are designed to be steerable and safe, incorporating a framework called “Constitutional AI” to align outputs with human values. The Claude models are accessible through Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s fully managed service that provides secure access to top foundation models. This integration allows AWS customers to customize and fine-tune AI models to suit their specific needs.
Amazon’s investment in Anthropic positions AWS to better compete with other major cloud providers like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, both of which have made significant strides in AI. Microsoft’s substantial investment in OpenAI and integration of AI capabilities into its services have set a high bar in the industry. By partnering with Anthropic, Amazon aims to enhance its generative AI offerings and provide enterprise customers with advanced AI-driven solutions.
Matt Garman, AWS CEO, highlighted the positive response from customers using Anthropic’s models via Amazon Bedrock. “By continuing to deploy Anthropic models in Amazon Bedrock and collaborating with Anthropic on the development of our custom Trainium chips, we’ll keep pushing the boundaries of what customers can achieve with generative AI technologies,” Garman stated.
The scale of Amazon’s investment in Anthropic has attracted regulatory attention. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has expressed interest in reviewing large-scale AI investments, including Amazon’s stake in Anthropic. The CMA is examining whether such partnerships could result in a substantial lessening of competition within the UK market.
Amazon’s substantial investment in Anthropic underscores its commitment to advancing AI technologies and integrating them across its business units. By aligning with Anthropic, Amazon not only enhances its AI capabilities but also strengthens AWS’s position in the competitive cloud services market. This strategic partnership reflects the broader trend of tech giants investing heavily in AI to shape the future of technology and business.
