Amazon is making a significant push to extend the reach of its fast delivery services, announcing a major expansion that now covers over 13,000 zip codes across the United States. This move brings same-day and next-day delivery options to a broader array of communities, including many smaller towns and rural areas that have historically lacked such access.
Previously, rapid delivery was largely confined to densely populated urban areas where logistical efficiencies and proximity to fulfillment centers made it feasible. By broadening this service footprint, Amazon is aiming to close a longstanding gap in service availability, ensuring that customers in more remote locations can enjoy the same conveniences as their urban counterparts.
The company revealed that its same-day and next-day deliveries have increased by 30% compared to the previous year, reflecting growing consumer demand for faster order fulfillment. To support this growth, Amazon plans to invest $4 billion through 2026 in expanding its rural delivery infrastructure. This includes building over 200 new delivery stations across the country, many of which will be strategically located to minimize delivery times in previously underserved areas.
One of the most impactful elements of this expansion is job creation. Amazon estimates that the project will lead to more than 100,000 new roles across various functions—including delivery drivers, warehouse staff, and operations support—many of which will be sourced from within the local communities. Each new delivery station is expected to create around 170 jobs on average, offering economic benefits alongside improved access to services.
Beyond physical infrastructure, Amazon is also leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence to optimize its supply chain. The company is using AI to better predict local product demand, enabling more effective inventory placement at nearby fulfillment centers. This localized inventory approach is expected to reduce delivery times even further while ensuring that popular products are in stock and ready to ship.
According to Amazon, this tailored model will help improve customer satisfaction and reduce operational waste, both by minimizing overstock and by cutting down on long-distance shipping. These efficiencies also support the company’s broader sustainability goals by decreasing carbon emissions associated with extended delivery routes.
The expansion is part of Amazon’s larger strategy to maintain its dominance in e-commerce logistics at a time when competitors like Walmart and Target are also investing in faster shipping options.
