On January 28, 2025, the U.S. Senate confirmed Sean Duffy as Secretary of Transportation with a decisive 77–22 vote, marking a significant milestone in President Donald Trump’s second-term Cabinet appointments. Duffy, a former Republican congressman from Wisconsin and Fox Business host, was nominated by President Trump on November 18, 2024. His confirmation reflects broad bipartisan support, with 23 Democrats, one independent, and 53 Republicans voting in favor.

Duffy’s confirmation hearing on January 15, 2025, before the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, was notably marked by bipartisan camaraderie. Both of Wisconsin’s senators—Democrat Tammy Baldwin and Republican Ron Johnson—introduced Duffy, highlighting his collaborative efforts in securing federal funding for infrastructure projects like the St. Croix Crossing bridge between Wisconsin and Minnesota.

During the hearing, Duffy emphasized his commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges, particularly in regions affected by natural disasters. He announced plans to visit the Appalachian regions of Tennessee and North Carolina, where flooding from Hurricane Helene had damaged major highways and bridges.

Duffy also pledged to prioritize rail safety, especially in the wake of the 2023 Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. He expressed intentions to oversee the implementation of funds from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law, focusing on electric vehicle charging infrastructure and other critical transportation projects.

Upon his swearing-in, Duffy stated, “We are already hard at work executing the President’s vision to usher in a golden age of transportation by taking immediate action to remove government overreach and lower costs for hardworking Americans.”

As Secretary of Transportation, Duffy will oversee a department with over 55,000 employees and a budget exceeding $110 billion. His leadership is expected to focus on enhancing safety standards, reducing regulatory burdens, and fostering innovation in the nation’s transportation systems.

Duffy’s confirmation adds to the list of President Trump’s second-term Cabinet appointments, which includes Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, Scott Bessent as Secretary of the Treasury, and Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense.

With his diverse background in law, politics, and media, Duffy brings a multifaceted perspective to the Department of Transportation. His tenure is anticipated to be pivotal in shaping the future of America’s transportation infrastructure and policies.
