Postmaster General Louis DeJoy Resigns Amid Policy Clashes and Privatization Push

CEO Times Contributor

Louis DeJoy has resigned as Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service (USPS), concluding a nearly five-year tenure marked by ambitious reforms, political controversy, and growing tensions over the agency’s future. His resignation, effective March 24, 2025, comes amid escalating friction with the Trump administration and its Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, which has advocated for sweeping changes to USPS operations .

DeJoy, appointed in 2020 during President Trump’s first term, implemented the “Delivering for America” plan—a 10-year strategy aimed at modernizing USPS infrastructure, improving service reliability, and achieving financial sustainability. Under his leadership, the agency reported a $144 million profit in late 2024, its first in years .

However, DeJoy’s tenure was fraught with controversy. Critics accused him of implementing cost-cutting measures that led to mail delays, particularly during the 2020 election when mail-in voting surged . Additionally, his plans to consolidate mail processing centers and reduce workforce numbers faced opposition from labor unions and some lawmakers.

In his resignation letter, DeJoy cited ongoing disagreements over efficiency initiatives and data-sharing policies with DOGE. He expressed frustration with what he described as “unceasing resistance to change” from stakeholders motivated by political interests . Despite these challenges, he maintained that his efforts had positioned USPS on a path toward financial stability.

Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino has been appointed as acting Postmaster General. Tulino, a USPS veteran with over four decades of experience, previously served as Chief Human Resources Officer and Deputy Postmaster General. He is expected to lead the agency during this transitional period until a permanent successor is named .

The USPS Board of Governors has initiated the search for a new Postmaster General, retaining executive search firm Egon Zehnder to assist in identifying suitable candidates . Among the potential successors is David Steiner, a FedEx board member and former CEO of Waste Management. Steiner’s possible appointment has drawn criticism from postal unions, who view his ties to a USPS competitor as a conflict of interest and a step toward privatization .

The Trump administration’s push to reform USPS has included proposals to merge the agency with the Department of Commerce and to privatize certain operations. These initiatives have faced opposition from lawmakers and postal workers, who argue that such moves could undermine the agency’s public service mission and lead to reduced service quality .

As USPS navigates this leadership transition, the agency continues to grapple with financial challenges and debates over its future role. The outcome of the search for a new Postmaster General will likely influence the direction of USPS reforms and its ability to balance efficiency with its mandate to provide universal mail service.
