From Red Oak to Master: The Carpet Store Story

How Matt and Denise Riley built elite flooring craftsmanship in a small Iowa town.

The carpet in Carol's Shenandoah home had not changed in fifteen years. She had grown used to it, the way people grow used to things that no longer serve them. Then she walked into a showroom in Red Oak, Iowa, and met a woman who asked her a question no big box store ever had: not what she wanted to buy, but how she wanted her home to feel.

That question is the heart of The Carpet Store. It is also the reason families across southwest Iowa keep coming back.

A Family Business Built on Doing It Right

Matt and Denise Riley founded The Carpet Store in 2007. Located at 305 East Reed Street in the heart of Red Oak, the family-owned business has spent nearly two decades building one of the region's most trusted names in flooring and home remodeling.

They are not a franchise. They do not have a marketing department. They do not run television commercials. What they have is rarer: two people who have staked their reputation on doing the work themselves.

"We are a small business in a small town," Matt says. "We compete by being better. Better prepared, better trained, and more personally invested in the outcome than anyone else in our market."

That philosophy shapes every decision. The person who helps you choose your floor is the same person who measures your home. The person who installs your floor is the same person who has spent years studying how flooring is built and how it performs over time. There is no handoff. There is no subcontractor who does not know your project.

Why No Two Floors Are Alike

At The Carpet Store, every floor is custom. No two jobs are the same. Each project is designed around the client's specific home, specific space, and specific vision, measured by hand and installed with care.

"No two floors are the same," Matt explains. "Every home is different, every client is different, and every installation we do reflects that. We do not do cookie cutter."

Denise leads the design side of the business. She has spent nearly two decades helping southwest Iowa's most discerning homeowners and businesses find exactly the right floor. She visits each home personally, takes the measurements herself, and brings a designer's eye to every consultation. Her work does not stop at the sale. She ensures every detail is right before a single plank or tile is ordered.

"Denise doesn't just sell a floor," Matt says. "She helps our clients imagine what their home could feel like. That's a completely different conversation than what you get at a big box store."

The showroom carries one of the most extensive selections in the region. Carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, laminate, tile, and natural stone from industry-leading brands including Mohawk, Anderson Tuftex, Shaw, Dal-Tile, and Pergo. Every product comes with manufacturer-backed warranties and pricing that competes with the big boxes, without sacrificing the personal attention only a local, family-run business can offer.

The Pursuit of Mastery

What truly sets The Carpet Store apart is the depth of expertise behind every installation. Matt holds ten IICRC certifications, covering everything from carpet repair and water restoration to color repair and fire and smoke restoration. He also holds three IICRC Journeyman designations: Journeyman Fire and Smoke Restorer, Journeyman Textile Cleaner, and Journeyman Water Restorer.

In December 2026, Matt will complete the final time requirement to achieve IICRC Master status, having already fulfilled every other credential required. That achievement places him among a small, elite group of flooring professionals in the entire country. He is also a State of Iowa Licensed Contractor, and The Carpet Store is a Certified IICRC Firm.

"I got certified not because I had to, but because I wanted to truly understand what I was doing," Matt says. "When you know how a floor is supposed to perform, you install it completely differently."

That knowledge shows in the details most customers never see. "Most people don't realize how much goes into a great installation," he explains. "The floor you see is only part of it. What's underneath, how the subfloor is prepared, how the material is acclimated, all of that matters. We don't skip steps."

Beyond the showroom, the team handles subfloor repair, area rug binding, custom area rugs, carpet repair and re-stretching, and commercial installations. Their shop-at-home service brings samples directly to your door, so you can see exactly how a floor will look in your space before committing.

Trust Earned One Floor at a Time

The results speak through the people they serve. Jennifer and Tom of Red Oak built their dream home and wanted something no one else had. "Denise came out twice, brought samples both times, and never once made us feel rushed," they recall. "Matt's installation was so clean our builder asked us who did the work."

Rick, a property manager in Atlantic, calls The Carpet Store the only flooring company he trusts. "When you need it done right the first time, there's only one call to make."

That loyalty comes from a mindset Matt describes simply. "When I walk into a home, I'm not thinking about the next job. I'm thinking about this one. This client. This floor. That's the only way to do it right."

The business has also made room for creativity in unexpected ways. The same showroom is home to Designs by Denise, a women's clothing boutique that reflects the entrepreneurial spirit driving everything the Rileys do.

Their reach extends across Red Oak, Clarinda, Atlantic, Shenandoah, Glenwood, and communities throughout southwest Iowa. Through it all, they have never chased volume. Every client receives the same level of personal attention, regardless of the size of the job.

"Southwest Iowa deserves the same quality of work that you'd find in any major city," Matt says. "That's what we set out to prove in 2007, and that's what we're still proving every day."
