In a strategic move to bolster its global research and development capabilities, Chevron Corporation has announced a $1 billion investment to establish the Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center (ENGINE) in Bengaluru, India. This initiative marks Chevron’s most significant investment outside the United States and underscores its commitment to advancing energy solutions through technological innovation.

The ENGINE center, slated to be located near Bellandur in Bengaluru, aims to leverage India’s robust engineering and technological talent pool to support Chevron’s global operations. The facility will focus on developing advanced technologies in energy efficiency, carbon capture, and renewable energy. By integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital twin technologies, ENGINE will work on projects ranging from geotechnical analysis to predictive maintenance of refinery operations.

Chevron plans to recruit approximately 600 professionals by the end of 2025, encompassing disciplines such as mechanical, chemical, petroleum, civil, structural, electrical, and computer science engineering, as well as geology and environmental sciences. The company envisions ENGINE as a collaborative environment where Indian professionals will work alongside Chevron’s global experts to drive innovation in the energy sector.

Akshay Sahni, the incoming Country Head for Chevron India, emphasized the significance of this investment, stating, “Chevron ENGINE will create meaningful opportunities for local professionals to work on the incredible challenge of meeting the global energy demands of today and building the lower carbon energy system of tomorrow.” He added that the center aims to foster a diverse and inclusive workforce dedicated to delivering affordable, reliable, and ever-cleaner energy solutions.

The establishment of ENGINE aligns with India’s vision of becoming a global hub for technological innovation and sustainable energy solutions. Bengaluru, often referred to as the “Silicon Valley of India,” offers a conducive ecosystem for such initiatives, with its concentration of skilled professionals and supportive infrastructure.

Chevron’s investment also reflects a broader trend among multinational corporations recognizing India’s potential as a center for research and development. The ENGINE center is expected to play a pivotal role in Chevron’s efforts to enhance operational reliability, develop low-carbon energy solutions, and explore subsurface geology for carbon storage.

This move comes at a time when the global energy industry is undergoing significant transformation, with increased emphasis on sustainability and technological advancement. Chevron’s commitment to establishing ENGINE in India demonstrates its proactive approach to addressing these evolving challenges and opportunities.
