Arcadis Strengthens Executive Leadership to Support Global Growth and Client Service

CEO Times Contributor

On August 22, 2023, Arcadis, a prominent global design and consultancy firm for natural and built assets, announced a strategic expansion of its Executive Leadership Team (ELT), reflecting the company’s focus on global growth, operational integration, and client-centric service. The promotion of three Global Business Area leaders to the ELT is intended to enhance cross-border collaboration and improve the company’s ability to respond to evolving client needs across international markets.

Among the newly appointed executives is Edel Christie, who assumes the role of Chief Growth Officer, succeeding Mary Ann Hopkins following her planned retirement in June 2023. Christie brings a wealth of experience in strategy, innovation, and transformation, having led Arcadis’s global Places business area. Her new position will focus on spearheading growth initiatives, developing strategic partnerships, and driving innovation in client solutions. Her appointment also marks a continued commitment to advancing diversity and leadership representation at the highest levels of the company.

Joining Christie in the ELT are Greg Steele and Stephanie Hottenhuis, each bringing deep domain expertise and leadership in delivering integrated, client-focused solutions. Steele, who previously led Arcadis’s Mobility business area, will now play a greater role in aligning operational delivery with client priorities. Hottenhuis continues her oversight of the global Resilience business, focusing on infrastructure, water, and environmental services, all of which are critical in addressing climate change and sustainability challenges.

The ELT expansion comes at a time of significant transformation for Arcadis, which has experienced strong growth driven by increased demand for sustainable infrastructure, climate resilience planning, and digital engineering solutions. By bringing key business leaders into the executive fold, Arcadis aims to streamline decision-making, accelerate innovation, and better coordinate service delivery across its global footprint.

“Our ambition is to be the leading partner for sustainable design and consultancy solutions worldwide,” said Peter Oosterveer, CEO of Arcadis. “Strengthening our executive team with the leaders of our core business areas ensures we are well-positioned to meet the complex needs of our clients while driving performance and operational excellence.”

The leadership transition also aligns with Arcadis’s broader strategic objectives, including its focus on decarbonization, digital transformation, and smart mobility. By enhancing executive oversight across geographies and sectors, the company aims to improve scalability and responsiveness in a competitive global market.

Analysts view the ELT expansion as a prudent move to maintain momentum and deepen internal collaboration as client demands become increasingly global and interdisciplinary. The firm has been steadily growing its presence in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, and recent projects include major urban regeneration, transport modernization, and climate adaptation programs.

Arcadis’s emphasis on leadership development and internal mobility is seen as a strength in attracting and retaining top talent across regions. The company’s investments in digital capabilities, including artificial intelligence and data analytics, are also positioning it as a forward-looking player in the professional services industry.

With the newly strengthened Executive Leadership Team in place, Arcadis is poised to continue its mission of improving quality of life through sustainable and innovative design solutions, guided by experienced leaders who understand both local context and global complexity.
