Stellantis N.V., the multinational automaker behind brands like Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler, has announced the appointment of Antonio Filosa as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective June 23, 2025. The decision follows a six-month search initiated after the abrupt resignation of former CEO Carlos Tavares in December 2024.

A Veteran Leader Takes the Helm

Antonio Filosa, 51, brings over 25 years of experience within the company, having started his career at Fiat in 1999. His extensive background includes leadership roles across South America and North America, where he served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Quality Officer.

Filosa is credited with elevating the Fiat brand to market leadership in South America and significantly expanding the presence of Peugeot, Citroën, Ram, and Jeep in the region. Notably, he spearheaded the development of the Pernambuco plant in Brazil, establishing it as one of South America’s largest automotive hubs.

His track record also includes strategic innovations aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing customer satisfaction. Filosa’s efforts in launching new models tailored to regional markets have been widely recognized within the automotive industry.

Challenges Ahead for Stellantis

Filosa’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Stellantis. The company has faced declining sales and profits, particularly in the U.S. and European markets. In the first quarter of 2025, Stellantis reported a 14% drop in revenue, attributed to lower shipment volumes and unfavorable pricing.

The automaker is also navigating the complexities of transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) amid stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers and geopolitical tensions affecting trade policies. Stellantis has delayed several EV launches, prompting criticism from analysts and investors concerned about the company’s ability to meet regulatory requirements and market expectations.

Strategic Vision and Leadership Style

Known for his collaborative and people-centric leadership style, Filosa emphasizes strong relationships with employees, suppliers, and dealers. In a recent memo to employees, he stated, “This company is in my blood, and I couldn’t be more proud of the chance to work with all of you.”

Filosa’s immediate focus will be on revitalizing Stellantis’ U.S. operations, streamlining its 14-brand global portfolio, and accelerating the company’s EV initiatives. He is expected to announce a new leadership team upon officially assuming the CEO role.

Key initiatives under his leadership will likely include optimizing production lines, reinforcing dealer networks, and expanding digital retail platforms. These efforts aim to boost consumer engagement and drive revenue growth across core markets.

Industry and Shareholder Reactions

The appointment has been met with cautious optimism from industry analysts and shareholders. John Elkann, Executive Chairman of Stellantis and heir to the Fiat-founding Agnelli family, expressed confidence in Filosa’s capabilities, highlighting his deep understanding of the company and the automotive industry.

However, some analysts view the internal appointment as a conservative choice, given the company’s current challenges. Concerns remain about Stellantis’ ability to regain lost market share and implement a timely and effective EV strategy.

Despite these reservations, many in the industry believe Filosa’s insider knowledge and hands-on experience could prove advantageous. His proven ability to lead complex projects and adapt to evolving market dynamics positions him well to steer the company through turbulent times.

Looking Forward

As Stellantis embarks on this new chapter under Filosa’s leadership, the automotive industry will be closely watching how the company addresses its current hurdles and positions itself for future growth. Filosa’s track record suggests a focus on operational efficiency, brand revitalization, and a commitment to innovation in the evolving automotive landscape.

With his official tenure set to begin in late June, stakeholders will be eager to see early signs of change and strategic direction. Whether Filosa can successfully navigate Stellantis through its current challenges will largely shape the company’s trajectory in the years ahead.
