Kristy Whilden’s New Children’s Book, Alice’s Colorful New World, Celebrates American Sign Language And Supports The American School For The Deaf

CEO Times Contributor

Kristy Whilden, a deaf #1 International Bestselling Author and founder and CEO of Hands Up Silent Theatre, has unveiled her children’s book, Alice’s Colorful New World. This new release highlights the rich history and significance of American Sign Language (ASL), while also raising funds for the American School for the Deaf.

Whilden, who lost 75% of her hearing due to progressive sensorineural hearing loss, has long been dedicated to advocating for the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (HOH) communities. Through her nonprofit, Hands Up Silent Theatre, she creates accessible theater experiences for both d/Deaf/HOH and hearing audiences. Whilden’s publishing arm, Whilden Publishing, is dedicated to producing stories that authentically represent differently-abled characters, especially those from the d/Deaf/HOH community. Alice’s Colorful New World is no exception, and it aims to educate children about ASL while promoting inclusivity and understanding.

The book is a tribute to Alice Cogswell and Laurent Clerc, two pivotal figures in the development of ASL. Through this project, Whilden seeks to inspire children to learn about ASL, understand its historical significance, and foster respect for the d/Deaf community. “I want children to learn about ASL and the historical figures who shaped it,” Whilden explains. “Through this book, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of the d/Deaf community.”

A portion of the proceeds from every copy sold will benefit the American School for the Deaf’s new history museum. For each book purchased, $1 will be donated to support the creation of the museum, which will honor the contributions of the d/Deaf community. Whilden aims to sell one million copies of Alice’s Colorful New World and raise one million dollars for this important cause.

In addition to her book, Whilden remains committed to supporting d/Deaf/HOH performers. As a passionate advocate for accessibility in the arts, she envisions a future where d/Deaf/HOH artists perform on prestigious stages like Broadway, and she hopes to see more representation at major awards like the Tony Awards. Whilden’s advocacy highlights the limitless potential of d/Deaf talent in the performing arts.

As a recognized leader in promoting accessibility, Whilden continues to break down barriers in both theater and literature. Alice’s Colorful New World exemplifies her dedication to educating young audiences while supporting a vital cause that celebrates the d/Deaf community’s history.

In recognition of her groundbreaking work, Hands Up Silent Theatre and Whilden Publishing have been named Best in Performing Arts Innovation in the United States of 2025 by the Evergreen Awards. This prestigious honor celebrates Whilden’s exceptional contributions to making the performing arts more inclusive, particularly for the d/Deaf and HOH communities. Her efforts through both theater and publishing have set a new standard for accessibility in the arts, empowering individuals of all abilities to engage with and experience the performing arts in meaningful ways.

As the founder of Hands Up Silent Theatre, Whilden has transformed her personal experience with hearing loss into an opportunity to create a platform that bridges the gap between d/Deaf/HOH and hearing audiences. Her innovative approach has redefined how theater can be accessible to all, ensuring that everyone, regardless of hearing ability, has the opportunity to participate and enjoy the arts.

Whilden’s passion extends beyond the stage and into literature. Through Whilden Publishing, she is helping to bring diverse, inclusive stories to young readers. Alice’s Colorful New World is a perfect example of this commitment, offering a window into the history of ASL while promoting respect for the d/Deaf community. By incorporating characters that reflect the realities of differently-abled individuals, Whilden Publishing is creating a new narrative in children’s literature—one that is inclusive, educational, and representative of all experiences.

Whilden’s recent accomplishments, including the release of Alice’s Colorful New World, are just one facet of her ongoing mission to change the landscape of arts and education. She has previously been recognized with the Russ Berrie Making a Difference Award for her transformative work in New Jersey, a testament to her tireless advocacy for the d/Deaf/HOH community.

In a recent development, Alice’s Colorful New World has also earned the title of Best Children’s Educational Book in the US of 2025 by Best of Best Review. This recognition underscores the significant impact the book has had on young readers and the broader community. Aimed at fostering understanding and appreciation for ASL, the book has become a leading educational tool in the U.S., further solidifying Whilden’s position as a trailblazer in both the literary and performing arts realms.

As a #1 International Bestselling Author, Whilden’s influence extends far beyond the page. Her ultimate goal is to inspire more d/Deaf/HOH performers to take center stage in the arts, and she dreams of a future where these performers shine in major productions, including the Tony Awards. Whilden’s vision is not just about entertainment; it’s about ensuring that all voices, regardless of hearing ability, are understood and respected in the world of theater.

In a statement about her future goals, Whilden says, “I want to make a difference, not just in the arts but in education and awareness. If I can sell a million copies of Alice’s Colorful New World, that’s a million dollars I can donate to the American School for the Deaf—and that’s just the beginning.”

Kristy Whilden’s commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment continues to drive her work forward. Her groundbreaking efforts in the performing arts and children’s literature are paving the way for a future where the arts are more inclusive, more representative, and more accessible for all individuals, regardless of ability.
