Microsoft has announced the acquisition of Miburo, a New York-based cybersecurity firm specializing in the detection and analysis of foreign information operations. This strategic move aims to bolster Microsoft’s threat intelligence capabilities amid escalating global cyber threats.
Founded in 2012 by Clint Watts, a former FBI agent and cybersecurity expert, Miburo has established itself as a leader in identifying and countering foreign influence campaigns. The firm’s research teams are proficient in detecting malign and extremist influence operations across 16 languages, providing valuable insights into the tactics employed by state-sponsored actors.
Under the terms of the acquisition, Miburo will become part of Microsoft’s Customer Security and Trust organization. The integration will see Miburo’s analysts collaborating closely with the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center, the Threat Context Analysis team, and data scientists to enhance the company’s threat detection and analysis capabilities.
Tom Burt, Corporate Vice President of Customer Security and Trust at Microsoft, emphasized the significance of the acquisition, stating, “With the acquisition of Miburo, we will continue our mission to take action and to partner with others in the public and private sectors to find long-term solutions that will stop foreign adversaries from threatening public and private sector customers and, in fact, the very foundations of our democracy.”
The acquisition comes at a time when cyber threats from nation-states are becoming increasingly sophisticated and pervasive. Microsoft has been actively involved in detecting and helping customers defend against such threats, and the integration of Miburo’s expertise is expected to further strengthen these efforts.
Miburo’s capabilities in analyzing foreign information operations will provide Microsoft with deeper insights into how adversaries use information campaigns in conjunction with cyberattacks to achieve their objectives. This knowledge is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to counteract such multifaceted threats.
While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, the acquisition underscores Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing its cybersecurity infrastructure and protecting its customers from emerging digital threats.
