A Culinary Journey Along the Jersey Shore

This article is part of FT Globetrotter’s guide to New York.

Introduction

While many might associate New Jersey with its reputation as a transit hub or a backdrop for reality television, the state actually boasts a rich variety of experiences and flavors. Recently relocating to Neptune City with my partner, Chuck, I have discovered the diverse culinary landscape of the Jersey Shore, where charming beach towns and gastronomic delights coexist beautifully.

The Jersey Shore Experience

Living just minutes away from Asbury Park, we have access to both the hustle and bustle of urban life and the tranquility of serene beaches. The Shore is an inviting destination throughout the year, especially renowned for its food culture.

For those venturing from New York City, I suggest taking the Seastreak ferry to the Atlantic Highlands, enjoying a leisurely beach walk before indulging in some of the best local dining options. Below are some beloved eateries you shouldn’t miss.

Dining Destinations

1. Frank’s Deli and Restaurant

Location: 1406 Main Street, Asbury Park, NJ 07712

Established for over 65 years, Frank’s Deli offers an authentic diner atmosphere complete with a long counter and smoky aromas. Known for its classic breakfast fare and hearty sandwiches, this local favorite has hosted numerous celebrities, including Anthony Bourdain.

Signature dishes include breakfast platters and their renowned turkey and provolone beach sandwiches, perfect for a day by the ocean.

2. Palmer’s Quality Meats

Location: 40 Steiner Avenue, Neptune City, NJ 07753

Palmer’s operates both as a butcher shop and a sandwich counter, emphasizing fresh, high-quality ingredients. Their cheesesteak, prepared with seared rib-eye and caramelized onions, provides a delightful twist on this classic, served on a sesame roll.

3. Hey Peach Bakery

Location: 126 Main Street, Bradley Beach, NJ 07720

This quaint bakery offers daily-changing selections of pastries and breads. Co-owners Erin and James Kilker pride themselves on small-batch production and distinctive offerings, such as freshly baked canelé and a variety of dense sourdough loaves.

4. Cardinal Provisions

5. Sundaes

Location: 2211 NJ-35, Manasquan, NJ 08736

A local favorite for ice cream, Sundaes is renowned for its unique corn-flavored ice cream made from the region’s sweet summer corn. This family-run establishment has several locations, ensuring easy access to this exquisite treat.

6. The Grand Tavern

Location: 1105 Sixth Avenue, Neptune City, NJ 07753

Despite its humble exterior, The Grand Tavern presents a refined yet relaxed dining experience with a seasonal American menu. From oysters au gratin to an exemplary burger, it embodies a perfect mix of comfort and quality.

7. Vic’s

Location: 60 Main Street, Bradley Beach, NJ 07720

Vic’s epitomizes the Italian-American dining experience with its iconic bar pies and nostalgic ambiance. Open since 1947, it continues to draw diners seeking genuine comfort food reminiscent of family meals, including a classic chopped salad alongside its pioneering bar pie.

8. Talula’s

Location: 550 Cookman Avenue #108, Asbury Park, NJ 07712

Famed for its wood-fired sourdough pizzas, Talula’s features an imaginative menu with enticing toppings. Their seasonal offerings, alongside staples such as the soppressata pie, highlight the chef’s creativity and respect for quality ingredients.
