Carlie Irsay-Gordon Named CEO of Indianapolis Colts After Father’s Passing

by CEO Times Contributor

Carlie Irsay-Gordon has officially taken the reins as the new owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Indianapolis Colts following the death of her father, longtime franchise owner Jim Irsay, on May 21, 2025. The transition marks a pivotal chapter not only for the Colts but also for the broader NFL community, as Carlie becomes one of the few women to lead an NFL franchise.

Jim Irsay, who owned the Colts for nearly three decades, passed away at age 65. Known for his passionate leadership and deep commitment to Indianapolis, Irsay was a transformative figure in the league. His passing triggered a pre-planned succession that has now formally installed his daughter Carlie at the helm, supported by her sisters Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson, both of whom hold vice chair roles.

Leading the Colts Into a New Era

Carlie Irsay-Gordon is no stranger to the Colts’ operations. Having served as Vice Chair and been actively involved in ownership decisions for over a decade, she steps into the CEO role with extensive experience in team leadership, league relations, and philanthropic endeavors.

“Carlie has been an integral part of this organization for years,” said Pete Ward, the team’s COO. “She has her father’s vision, heart, and commitment to Indianapolis. The future of the Colts is in strong and capable hands.”

Her leadership comes at a critical time for the team, as the Colts are navigating a rebuilding phase on the field while continuing to grow their brand and community outreach efforts off it. The transition of power is designed to ensure continuity while allowing for innovation and modernization in the franchise’s strategy.

A Family Tradition of Leadership

The Irsay family has been at the helm of the Indianapolis Colts since 1972, when Robert Irsay, Jim’s father, acquired the franchise. Jim Irsay assumed ownership in 1997 after his father’s death and led the team through some of its most successful years, including a Super Bowl XLI championship in 2007.

Carlie, Casey, and Kalen have been involved in team governance since the 2010s. Carlie, in particular, has served as the team’s representative at NFL owners meetings and was designated as the likely successor several years prior to her father’s passing. She holds a degree in psychology and has advocated for mental health initiatives through the Colts’ foundation, expanding the team’s influence beyond the stadium.

“I’m honored to continue the legacy my father built,” Carlie said in a statement. “We are committed to bringing championships back to Indianapolis while making a positive impact in our community.”

Honoring Jim Irsay’s Legacy

The Colts have announced plans to induct Jim Irsay into the team’s Ring of Honor during the 2025 season opener at Lucas Oil Stadium. The ceremony will celebrate his contributions both to the franchise and the city of Indianapolis, where he championed the construction of the stadium and numerous community development projects.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also acknowledged Irsay’s passing, calling him “a passionate leader and visionary whose contributions to the league were immeasurable.”

Under Jim Irsay’s leadership, the Colts became a consistent playoff contender, drafted Hall of Famers like Peyton Manning and Edgerrin James, and became a cornerstone franchise within the AFC.

The Road Ahead for the Colts

As the 2025 season approaches, Carlie Irsay-Gordon faces the challenge of guiding the Colts through a competitive AFC landscape. With a young roster and new coaching strategies in development, the team is aiming for a return to playoff contention under its new leadership.

Equally important is the continued expansion of the Colts’ community outreach programs, including mental health awareness, youth development, and veteran support—initiatives long championed by Carlie and her sisters.

The trio’s leadership, marked by inclusivity and strategic vision, is already drawing praise from league insiders and fans alike. “There’s a sense of stability and renewal,” said ESPN analyst Field Yates. “Carlie and her sisters are poised to lead the Colts into a new, exciting chapter.”
