Ilexis, a dedicated public health advocate, faced the grief of seven miscarriages. For many, such experiences would have been too painful to share publicly, yet Ilexis used her challenges to connect with others. “I don’t want others to feel bad and think they have to hide maternal health issues,” she says. “I want them to know that they are cared about regardless.”
As a doula and public health consultant, Ilexis’ work is grounded in compassion. She provides support for underserved mothers who need more than just medical attention, they need emotional understanding and empowerment. In addition to serving as a birth doula for several mothers, she offers public health communications services to both non-profit and for-profit organizations. Through her work, she aims to promote maternal health literacy, particularly in marginalized communities.

Ilexis’ journey into the world of health services began with her academic achievements and unwavering drive. At just 22 years old, she earned a Master of Public Health degree from Texas A&M University and a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration from Jackson State University. She could have easily followed a traditional career path, but Ilexis had a vision of impacting her community on a deeper level. In 2020, she founded Assertive Intuition Health Services, LLC to fill a critical gap in maternal health and public health education.
The company’s mission is clear: to provide doula services, health communication strategies, and education to communities that often feel invisible. “Public health issues are pervasive in underserved communities, but they often go unaddressed due to lack of access and awareness,” Ilexis shares. Through Assertive Intuition, she works to bridge that gap, ensuring that families in need receive the care, resources, and guidance they deserve.
Overcoming Obstacles: A Commitment to Making a Difference
Ilexis’ path has not been without its obstacles. From a personal standpoint, the pain of multiple miscarriages could have deterred many. But for Ilexis, these experiences have only strengthened her resolve. “Every setback led me to better understand the needs of others in similar situations. My experiences have made me a more empathetic doula and a stronger advocate for maternal health,” she explains.
Professionally, establishing a business that serves underserved populations presented challenges as well. In addition to navigating the complexities of maternal health, Ilexis has had to overcome the challenges of raising awareness about the importance of maternal health literacy in communities with limited access to resources. Yet, through persistence and dedication, she has garnered recognition for her efforts. In 2021, she received the prestigious Maternal Telehealth Access Project (MTAP) Grant Award, which helped her expand her ability to support families. In 2022, Ilexis was selected to participate in the Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women in Business Program, further solidifying her position as a leader in the health and wellness space.
Breaking Through: Making an Impact

One of her most exciting ventures is Assertive Babyssentials, a nonprofit she founded in 2024. The organization aims to provide essential baby supplies to families in Mississippi, particularly in Holmes County, one of the poorest regions in the United States. The goal is to reduce disparities by providing access to critical resources such as diapers, clothing, and health education, ultimately improving maternal and public health outcomes in the area.

She is in the process of securing funding to further support the nonprofit and to create a community center in Lexington, Mississippi, that will provide public health programs to local families. Ilexis is also working toward becoming a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, further solidifying her expertise in maternal health.
“I want to ensure that families have the support they need to thrive. Whether it’s through providing essential baby items, offering educational resources, or simply being there for a mother in need, I’m committed to improving lives,” she says.
