HSBC Appoints Lisa McGeough as U.S. CEO Amid Strategic Overhaul

HSBC has appointed Lisa McGeough as Chief Executive Officer of its U.S. operations, effective January 1, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the bank’s ongoing global restructuring efforts. McGeough becomes the first woman to lead HSBC’s U.S. division in over a decade and only the second female CEO in the bank’s 150-year history .

In her new role, McGeough will oversee all of HSBC’s businesses in the United States, with a particular focus on expanding the bank’s corporate and institutional banking presence in North America. She will be based in New York City and report to Michael Roberts, who has been appointed CEO of HSBC Bank plc and CEO of Corporate and Institutional Banking .

McGeough joined HSBC in 2021 and most recently served as Co-Head of Global Banking Coverage, overseeing a multi-billion-dollar business across 60 markets. Prior to joining HSBC, she held senior leadership roles at Wells Fargo, including Executive Vice President and Head of International, and at Morgan Stanley and Toronto Dominion Securities .

Her appointment comes as part of a broader organizational overhaul initiated by HSBC’s global CEO, Georges Elhedery. The bank has restructured its operations into East and West regions, aiming to streamline decision-making and enhance efficiency. This strategic shift includes the consolidation of HSBC’s corporate and institutional banking divisions and the relocation of key executives to better align with the bank’s global growth objectives .

McGeough’s extensive experience in global banking positions her to lead these efforts effectively.
